As you'd expect in any big city, the selection of San Juan Puerto Rico hotels is large and your choice of hotel should reflect what type of vacation you're planning.
If you're planning on spending much of your time in Old San Juan then the choice is relatively easy and you should either pick a hotel right in the middle of the old town or close enough to get there easily.

If you're planning on mixing Old San Juan with visits to other locations on the island then choose a hotel close enough to the old town but with easy access to the highways out of town. Close to Old San Juan are the Caribe Hilton and Normandy Hotel - both offer upmarket accommodation with excellent communication with both Old San Juan and the airport and Hotel Excelsior in Miramar.
Lastly, if you idea of a vacation is to spend most of your time poolside then you should choose one of the hotels in Isla Verde. Destinations in their own right, you needn't set foor outside the hotel until it's time to go home.
