With its large urban sprawl, San Juan can be confusing to navigate, so you should definitely carry a roadmap if you rent a car at the airport - you stand a good chance of getting lost without San Juan or Puerto Rico maps and some neighborhoods are not tourist friendly.
If you wait until you're in Puerto Rico, maps are available from bookstores -Borders in Old San Juan for example.
Maps are not always accurate though - road numbers don't always coincide with what you find on the roads. However, since the island is relatively small, many Puerto Rico maps show detail of San Juan and other cities on their reverse.
If you are renting a car at the airport then we recommend you to buy a map before you leave - Amazon and other online stores have a selection of Puerto Rico maps.
