Play golf in Puerto Rico
Although
today you can play golf in Puerto Rico at one of 18 courses, it was not
until the 1930s that golfers were able to indulge in their sport.
Golf is currently the second or third most popular vacation activity in the Caribbean and the challenging courses in Puerto Rico are the result of top golf course designers working within a diverse topography.
There are currently 14 golf clubs in Puerto Rico with 18 courses to choose from - 14 of these are Championship courses - where you can tee off under a clear blue sky on the cliff tops above the Caribbean or the Atlantic Ocean.
The first golf courses were constructed back in the '30s for the managers and staff of the sugar mills, and the all-sand courses had greens made of a sand and coconut oil to provide enough consistency to allow players to be able to putt.
This construction of the greens was exceedingly flat and they were very easy and it wasn't until a suitable strain of Bermuda grass had been developed in the 1950s that grass courses became the norm.
Before the better courses became established in the '50s and '60s most golfers were in the military - World War II had seen an increase in the number of golf facilities with new courses being built on military installations - but once the standard of the courses improved, golf in Puerto Rico started to take off.
