Flights to Puerto Rico
One
of the great things about Puerto Rico for American visitors is that
it is so easy to get a flight and all the major airlines fly there from
the major US airports.
If you're travelling from Europe though things are a little different and you can either fly via Madrid and on Iberia, or else you'll need to fly to the US mainland for a connecting flight.
The advantage of this latter option is the greater choice of flights on both legs of the journey.
While most flights to Puerto Rico arrive in the capital, San Juan, there are also international flights to Aguadilla - more convenient if your destination is to the west of the island, although it only takes a couple of hours from San Juan - and also to Ponce in the south.
San Juan actually has two airports, the main one being the Luis Muņoz Marin International Airport - often known as LMM, although its official airport code is SJU.
Located east of San Juan in Isla Verde, LMM is also the Caribbean's major air hub and many visitors to the Caribbean pass through San Juan on the way to their final destination.
Airlines flying to Puerto Rico
Most of the airlines operating flights to Puerto Rico are US based, headed by American Airlines, while its subsidiary American Eagle dominates the intra-Caribbean routes.
LMM is served by American Airlines, BWIA, Delta, Continental, Air Canada, British Airways, Iberia, Lufthansa, Northwest, United and US Airways. Another important airline to consider is the low cost airline JetBlue, with flights from New York and Newark and Air Flamenco operates flights to Puerto Rico from the US Virgin Islands and Anguilla as well as connecting San Juan, Fajardo, Ponce and the islands of Culebra and Vieques and seems a good way to get around.
Finding the best deal
You can easily find the best deals on flights to Puerto Rico by spending just a little time and effort on investigation - also see our guide to getting the best deals.
We were able to find a 30 percent discount on one airline's published rate when ravelling from Europe. The benchmark fare was quoted on Iberia's web site but we easily found several sites offering much better deals on exactly the same flights - on a $2,000 published fare that makes quite a difference to your pocket.
The best price was provided by www.despegar.com, but you should do your own research to find the best current deals.
